Leather Jacket & Jeans: Style Challenge Day 8

Sometimes I really struggle with my wardrobe. Despite getting rid of lots of clothes, I’ve got a drawer of tops that is absolutely packed full (as in, I can barely open it because they burst out), and I must have at least 40 dresses still in my wardrobe (down from over 100 I’d say), but I don’t feel like any of them are quite right any more. I’m telling myself that I will wear them – when it’s warmer, when it’s colder, when I’ve got the right shoes or cardigan to wear with them, when I’ve got the right occasion. But then I wonder, is there any point keeping these clothes around if I don’t have the reason to wear them now?

Case in point – the day I wore this outfit. This was on Sunday and we were going to my grandparents’ house for lunch. I wanted to wear something “nice” because we were going for lunch (although apparently I’m always overdressed according to my family!) and I wanted something that was somewhat creative as I knew I’d be taking photos for this Style Challenge and that I’d most likely be able to take them outside in a nicer location on our way to drive there. I pulled out an old floral vintage dress then searched for something to wear with it. I pulled out a few cardigans but thought that I always wear cardigans. Then I remembered this outfit with the dress where I wore a jumper over it and thought that could work. So I found a grey jumper and put that on with the collar stuck out. I got on with my morning, sorting some washing out and whatnot wearing this outfit, but it just didn’t feel right. I felt like the skirt was too short, the jumper wasn’t sitting in the right place. I just didn’t feel like me.

So as we got ready to go, I told Ben to wait and ran upstairs where I chucked on this outfit instead. It’s not groundbreaking my any stretch of the imagination, but I felt so much more comfortable in it straight away. I’m not sure whether it was just the dress or the fact that the outfit didn’t quite work, but the dress is currently sat aside looking at me sadly while I contemplate its fate and whether it will join its companions in the charity shop. I hate getting rid of clothes that have a story – I bought this in a vintage shop in Durham when Charley came to visit when we lived near there and also wore it to a vintage festival – but if they’re not working for me any more, is there any point in keeping them around in my wardrobe?

The leather jacket on the other hand, I love wearing right now. I love that it’s a staple piece with a difference in the fur collar and belted waist, and it sits at just the right place at my waist too. To be honest, I’m not as keen on these Topshop Joni jeans as I am my Hollister similar ones, but they are really comfortable so they stick around! Then the top underneath is a great one for wearing with jeans when I don’t want the outfit to look too simple – worn before here.

Do you ever feel like this about your wardrobe?

    Girrrlll, I totally feel ya!
I used to be exactly like this with my clothes, holding on to pieces because of ‘this’ or ‘that’, but eventually I learned you’ve just got to be ruthless! If I know I don’t wear something anymore (say within the past year to 6 months) it gets chucked straight out. My wardrobe is still wayyy overfull but still, it’s better than it was.
You’ll feel much better for it!! Plus, an excuse to buy more clothes haha.

    I love this outfit also!

Aah yes, definitely! I’ve been slowly getting rid of things for about a year now and had a few big clear outs during that time – the last was probably my biggest – and I’m definitely feeling better about it already! I’ve got more room to fit everything into my wardrobe now too ;D
      Thank you 🙂

I do too – new clothes just seem so much more appealing!

Loving the jacket, looks great with the high waist jeans, I hate wearing clothes that don’t feel right (my husband doesn’t get this, esp when I end up trying everything on (sometimes twice)) I’m thinking of sorting out my clothes and any I’m unsure on I will putt them in a box out of the way, if I don’t miss them after a couple months or longer then they need to go. Last year was the first I’ve packed my summer clothes away in the loft which has freed up some space although whilst packing it away I realised nearly half was hardly worn, some never.

Haha partners never seem to understand! I like the idea of putting some to one side and seeing if you’re bothered by them being gone. I packed some summer clothes away last year too and realised I didn’t wear some of those too – although it may be slightly because we didn’t get good enough weather to do so!
