Your Mum Wore That

I was recently contacted by Style Fruits to take part in a competition they were running called: ‘Your Mum Wore That’. The idea was to get hold of something your mum had worn around the same age as you and show how you would style it now. Well, I immediately thought it would be fun to enter! I knew that my mum still had a few pieces of clothing from back when she was around my age, so I got thinking about which ones she could send me. There was the floral Laura Ashley midi dress with a matching jacket that she wore to my Christening – I nearly attacked this once when I was younger to shorten it, but luckily she didn’t let me! If it was done professionally though it would look good! And then there was the pink midi dress that I’d tried before and that she’d worn for her first date with my dad! Funny story there, he hates pink and apparently didn’t like that dress – but they’re still together so she must have made a better impression than just what she was wearing! But they had known each other for a long while before anyway 😀 But she didn’t think there were any pictures of her wearing that one though. So we came to the decision that her strapless white midi dress would be perfect – I could even remember the pictures she was wearing it in since one of my favourite things to do is trawl through the old photo albums!
So here are some pictures of my mum in the dress 🙂 This is on their honeymoon to Spain (to the same area I’ve just been to actually!). And she’s younger than I am here – very strange!

Snood: Dorothy Perkins
Leather Jacket: Matalan (similar)
White Midi Dress: My mum’s!
Heels: ASOS
So I decided to style the dress in a slightly different way to her – this was a sensible decision considering I’m not in Spain in September but England at the end of October. I got this snood in Dorothy Perkins the other day. I had a £5 voucher and there was 25% off everything in store that day, so I got it for only £2.50 – not bad really! And of course, it’s pretty chilly right now, so I added my old favourite leather jacket. And finally, my favourite pair of heels because the length of the dress definitely shortens your legs! I’ve also discovered that ASOS have a tartan version of these shoes, eeps! They’re really comfortable, and I’ve also developed a minor tartan obsession this season, so I might need to buy them. I did just buy a tartan pencil skirt from Matalan though…and a tartan midi skirt. But I did have to return the tartan trousers, so maybe the shoes could act as a replacement?!
I was actually surprised at how well the outfit worked out! I was a bit worried about how I would make the dress work in the autumn, but with the burgundy, it works pretty well, and I might wear it like this as a skirt with a roll neck jumper (yes, I have a slight obsession with those too – I bought this one after my cystoscopy as a present to myself, and this one before, just because). I’ve already worn the H&M once twice, and I only got it two days ago, oops!

I can really see the resemblance between you two, you both have such lovely eyes. The jacket and snood colour is so pretty on you, but it’s so nice how it pops against the white too!

I love how you have styled it with a bold autumnal jacket. Fantastic colour with the white! What a fabulous challenge!

I love how you have teamed up the jacket with the dress 🙂

This is such a cool idea! Love the dress and leather jacket pairing. I’m not sure if I have any clothing of my mums – she has a habit of throwing things away. 🙂 x
