Okay, so it’s been a little while since I was a student. Fine, it’s been 3 years – whut?! So apparently I’ve been out of uni now as long as I was there – I’m a little bit in disbelief of that! Not only that, but I’ve been working at my current job for more than 2 years now. And yes, I’m fully aware that I look neither like a student nor a celeb in the pic above, but it was at my graduation, so it’s relevant – okay?!
When it comes to your wardrobe while studying away from home, you might look inside and feel that it’s not all that glamorous. Sure, you’ll spend pretty much all of your time when you’re not at lectures in pyjamas, but when you do venture outside you want to look good.
You might read Glamour or browse the Daily Mail Sidebar of Shame from time to time and wonder how you can look like one of the celebrities, who manage to look glamorous emerging from a five-hour training session at the gym or just walking down the street (you’re pretty sure that if you got photographed off-guard it would be like a scene from the Walking Dead). But what if we told you – yes, you – that you could dress like a celebrity? Every day?
Sarah Jessica Parker
We’re feeling inspired by the recent Met Gala event, which celebrated a Chinese theme and the celebrities who flocked to the red carpet in their creative get ups. SJP’s outfit was a real talking point and one which students like you can easily replicate for a night out.
Simply grab an old cereal box, cut out a large flame like shape, paint it red and then attach to an old headband. Pair with a long black dress and you’re good to go, just be sure to duck when you go through doorways.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is known for her incredible outfits, dramatic stunts and outrageous performances on stage featuring firework bras and giant eggs. It’s so easy to replicate one of Gaga’s signature looks and all you need to do is visit the meat aisle.
We suggest heading to Aldi to save some cash, where they regularly have great deals on beefsteaks and take them home to create your very own meat dress – yes, like the one Gaga wore back in 2010 at the MTV Video Music Awards. You’ll definitely get people talking in that 9am seminar on renaissance literature.
Yes, okay, we might be kidding with this one…but it certainly makes a statement, even if it is only for Halloween!
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian received a lot of stick for her floral dress, with many people likening her to a sofa or a pair of your Nan’s curtains, but as we all know vintage is on trend and as a student it’s a great way of saving a bit of cash when it comes to buying your outfits. You all know that I’m loving the vintage pieces I picked up recently at the Kilo Sale in Leeds (5 pieces for £15!) – I’m planning my next trip right now!
Head to your nearest charity shop or car boot sale and pick up an old curtain, get creative with some safety pins and channel Kim K when you pop to the local Co-Op to pick up vodka for pre-drinks.
Alternatively, if you’re not into smelling like a butchers’ or musty fabric then keep it simple. For example Blake Lively was recently seen in a gorgeous floral playsuit that ticked the latest 70s trend box (apparently meat dresses weren’t the rage back then) but while you might recoil now in horror at the price tag in Topshop on similar items, there are alternatives. Sites such as BlueVanilla, for example, currently hold an incredible 70s inspired range and offer 15% student discount, more than regular high street stores.
So, when it comes to saving money on clothing as a student and attempting to dress like a celebrity, always look for an alternative store – especially if they offer a student discount – or just head to your local supermarket and pick up a 3 for £10 deal on meat.
I really love that photo of you – your dress is amazing. 🙂
I addore Kim Kardashian’s style – she looks stunning every time, in every ocassion!
