My Top 5 Attractions in Magic Kingdom

I thought I’d start off this blog with a few more personal style posts – so you can get to me and what I love about Disney, while getting a look at some of the things the parks have to offer. After that, we can get into more in depth tips and guides, but it’s nice to start at the very beginning!
First things first, I love ALL of Magic Kingdom. For me, it’s not just about the rides and things to do, but the things to see and absorb around the Disney parks. But what would the parks be without the attractions that fill up the day?! It’s difficult to choose just a few, but I’ve gone for the ones that I would be most sad to miss out on a trip to Magic Kingdom – whether they’re a thrill ride, something with lots to see, or just one that’s a little bit nostalgic for me.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is just such a classic! It’s been a typical Disney ride for as long as I can remember – ever so slightly scary, but not so scary or with too many “drops” (just some slightly sped up hills) that it would upset a child. I love Disney boat rides – it’s just the smell of the Disney water I think, does anyone else understand this?!

Haunted Mansion Disney

Haunted Mansion

An old classic, and not one that childhood Sian would EVER have listed on a list of her top attractions – I was terrified of this as a child, but in a good way! It was the hitchhiking ghosts appearing in your Doom Buggy at the end – I thought they were going steal me and keep me inside the ride forever!
Nevertheless, this is a classic and super nostalgic for me. The queue area is one of the best I’ve experienced with interactive bits and pieces, (humorous!) gravestones to read and hidden jokes to look out for. And the pre-ride foyer areas are also amazing, especially the Expanding Room – I love the portraits in there!

Mickey's Philharmagic

Mickey’s PhilharMagic

Mickey’s Philharmagic is one of the newer attractions at Magic Kingdom (opening in 2011), but is so typical of the Disney style to me. 4D is something I LOVED as a child and still do today – Disney (and Universal) just do it so much better than anyone else! Tie it in with a fun story and hints of Fantasia and classic Disney, and you’ve got a winning combination for me!

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress

Ooh, now this is a controversial one! So many people I’ve spoken to dislike the Carousel of Progress as it’s “boring”. Many only visit it as an escape from the hot and humid Florida weather as you’re inside in the air conditioning sat down for a while, with the likelihood of no queue. BUT I love it. It’s one of Walt’s originals. It tells a story. And it has the BEST song – if you’ve ever experienced it, reading this sentence will have it in your head for the rest of the day: “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day.”
It was created for the New York World Fair in 1964, has been in Magic Kingdom since 1975 and is pretty much unchanged since, aside from a few updates to bring it into the “modern” world. It is one of the only attractions at Disney World that Walt himself would have experienced and worked personally on. It’s said to be one of his favourites!
And to say it’s so old, it’s very innovative (one of my favourite “Disney words!) – the theatre itself moves around various stages in a circle, showing the life of typical family through the ages as technology grows and changes. I for one hope it never goes!

Splash Mountain

The “Mountains”

Namely: Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Okay, I know it’s a bit of a cheat – but you can’t make me choose! Truth be told, I wasn’t a big fan of the Mountains at first – they were “big” rides to a 6 year old. I think I rode Thunder Mountain first, as that’s only like a run away mine cart, but it wasn’t until I was about 11 that I first rode Splash Mountain and I was even older when I rode Space Mountain after my dad telling me it was a proper rollercoaster in the dark! In fact, I’m still not a big fan of Space Mountain as a ride in itself – it’s bumpy and uncomfortable. But I do love the atmosphere, the sounds and the excitement of it.
As with most of my favourite attractions, it’s the atmosphere, details and story that I love about the Mountains – they’re old fashioned and awesome.
