We’ve all been told from a young age that we need to be brushing our teeth at least twice a day. Is an essential part of growing up! Along with learning to tie our shoes, zip up our coats all by ourselves and even comb our own hair, brushing our teeth properly is a life skill we all hope to master!

Experts such as Docklands Dental advise that we should be brushing at least twice a day, but why? Why is everyone so persistent when it comes to brushing? Well, here you’ll find 4 reasons why you should be brushing at least twice a day.

Keeping your breath fresh

Throughout the day, and particularly after meals, bacteria begins to build up on our teeth. It’s this bacteria that multiplies and gives us a nasty breath if we fail to brush twice a day. Brushing will keep the bacteria from building! Not removing the bacteria build up can also lead to lots of other dental problems, so try to brush twice a day, after every meal or even try chewing sugar free gum to help get rid of any nasty bacteria.

Preventing gum disease

Remember how we said that bacteria build up can lead to more problems further down the line? Well, gum disease is one of those potential issues. Not brushing your teeth as often as you should, lead to a build up of plaque on your teeth. Plaque is the name for all the bacteria and food that gets stuck in and around your teeth if you don’t clean them. If plaque goes untreated, or you simply don’t brush them, that leaves you open to all manner or new problems such as gingivitis – a yellow lining around the gumline and around the base of your tooth – this will inflame your gums, cause bleeding when you do brush and before you know it, you’re looking at tooth loss.

Preventing heart attacks and strokes

Yes, you that correctly! When you leave the bacteria to build on your teeth and in your mouth for a long period, then that bacteria can get into your bloodstream, this bacteria can then add to an increase in the cholesterol in your arteries and potentially cause a heart attack or stroke. Who knew brushing could prevent that?

Saves you money

Ever hear the term, prevention is better than cure? Well, it’s certainly better for your wallet that’s for sure! We’re told to head to the dentist every six months, why? Because seeing your dentist regularly means that they can stop an infection, or a problem in its tracks before it gets worse. Meaning you won’t have to fork out for lots of expensive procedures if you head to your dentist as often as they advise you to. So, if you brush your teeth at least twice a day, and take care of your teeth, you’re less likely to have to undergo treatment to repair the damage!
