In late 2025, I shared my most anticipated romance and romantasy picks for 2026, and even though we’re already two months into the year, I couldn’t leave the thriller lovers hanging! The literary world’s newest thriller book releases for 2026 are looking incredibly dark, twisty, and atmospheric.

This genre used to be my absolute favourite (thank you to Gone Girl for that obsession!). Nowadays I’m more of a romantasy kind of book girly, but I like to intersperse thriller books to keep me on my toes!
From award-winning authors making a grand return to the most surprising debut novels, the 2026 release radar for new books is packed. I’ve decided to organise this post month-by-month so I can keep adding to it as soon as a new publication date is announced. Whether it’s a high-stakes legal thriller or a slow-burn psychological thriller, here is the list of the books from thriller authors I’m most excited about this year. Scroll down to find out when they come and a little bit more information on them. Click below to shop them on Amazon.

Without further ado, here are the top thriller books for 2026 – some of which are already available to buy now!
New Thriller Book Releases 2026
January

My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney
Released: 20th January 2026
I’ve already ticked this one off my list! If you loved Sometimes I Lie or Beautiful Ugly (which I reviewed here), you know Alice Feeney is the queen of the unreliable narrator. This one is a tangled web of obsession and secrets within a marriage. When a woman discovers her husband might not be who he says he is, the fallout is mind-bending. It’s the perfect first book of the year to get your heart racing.

Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden
Released: 27th January 2026
Freida is back! After the massive success of The Housemaid series, her readers are obsessed. This is a new standalone that is every bit as addictive as her others. It follows an advice columnist who’s life isn’t all it seems to be, so instead of sitting back, the devious woman takes it into her own hands.
February
March

The Truth About Ruby Cooper by Liz Nugent
Release Date: 12th March 2026
Liz Nugent is a master of the dark, “literary” thriller. This one centres on a family torn apart by an incident that no one seems to know the real truth about. It sounds like one of those stories where you know everyone is guilty of something, and you’re just waiting for the first crack to appear.

The Hiding Season by A.C. Glass
Release Date: 17th March 2026
A claustrophobic psychological thriller about a woman who moves to a remote second home in a billionaire’s ski lodge to escape her past, only to stumble upon a body. It’s a classic slowly dying cause of tension that I imagine explodes in the final act!
April

The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer
Release Date: 23rd April 2026
Another Netgalley find! If you read We Used to Live Here, you’ll know Marcus writes “don’t go in there” horror-thrillers better than anyone. This one feels like a “no-brakes plummet into madness” as a man takes a job at a remote estate with a very specific, and very terrifying, list of rules.

The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke
Release Date: 7th April 2026
This is an interesting one that’s a highly anticipated book for 2026 as it combines the work of two big authors: V. E. Schwab and Cat Clarke under a pseudonym – if that’s not a good signal for the book, I don’t know what is! Six authors are invited to a private island by another author, only to find that he’s dead. But his most anticipated final book is unfinished, who will complete it? And who will survive to do so?
May

Such a Nice Girl by Andrea Mara
Release Date: 7th May 2026
Andrea Mara is the queen of the “it could happen to you” thriller. This one deals with a missing friend and the terrifying reality of how little we know the people closest to us.
June
July

Getting Away With Murder by Shari Lapena
Release Date: 16th July 2026
Shari Lapena is the master of the domestic thriller. Among the latest releases, this one is a deliciously dark “inverted” thriller where we watch the main characters commit a crime to save their lifestyle, only to realize that keeping the secret might be even harder than the act itself.

The Night Stairs by Erin Kelly
Release Date: 9th July 2026
I managed to snag an early copy of this on Netgalley and I’m very excited to get to it in a few months! Set in an old convent boarding school (I love this topic!), it follows a dark secret from 2002 that resurfaces in the present day. It’s got that lyrical prose Erin is known for, mixed with a chilling mystery about a legendary ghost and a series of “the spins” (mass psychogenic incidents) affecting the students.
August
September

The Silent Appeal by Janice Hallett
Release Date: 3rd September 2026
Two Janice Hallett books in one year? We are being spoiled! She has completely changed the literary world’s newest offerings with her epistolary style. This is the second installment in her new series, and if it’s anything like The Appeal, we can expect lots of emails, transcripts, and a puzzle that will make you feel like a real detective and a reckoning that’s been years in the making.
October

Chain Reaction (Jack Reacher #31) by Lee and Andrew Child
Release Date: 20th October 2026
For the first time since Never Go Back, Reacher’s old ally Susan Turner returns. When she sends a secretive invitation for a meeting in DC, Reacher finds himself in the middle of a sinister plot involving an unnamed agency.
Release Date: 6th October 2026
Freida is closing out the year with a spooky-themed psychological thriller. Not much is known about the plot yet (we don’t even have a cover!), but with her track record, it’s guaranteed to be one of the most anticipated books of the autumn.
Other big names to watch for:
While we don’t have firm dates for everything yet, keep an eye out for a new John Grisham legal thriller (rumoured to be a “new series” or a major standalone), and keep your ears to the ground for news from Kate Quinn and Nicci French.
