It’s the favourite season of book lovers around the world: autumn!
I used to be a summer girly, but in the past few years, I’ve been suckered in to the love of cosy fall days. Crisp autumn air and sunshine are the perfect kind of days for cosying up with a book, and even better, you can still enjoy the outdoors too before cosying up! Throw in the upcoming Halloween season (yes, my ghostie decorations are already out), and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a cosy witchy fall read.
I can’t say the cozy witch book was really my genre of choice until last year when I created my autumn TBR which included a mix of actually scary books along with those that just had slightly spooky vibes, plus a few cutesy Halloween books.
I’m going to give you a little bit of context about each of the books on the list, then give you one sentence to try to convince you to read it!
If you’re in your witchy era, looking for cozy fall vibes or just want to try something different to your usual autumn reads, here are a few options for cozy witchy books to add to your fall TBR. Just to give you an idea in advance of the types of books, there are a lot of Practical Magic comparisons!
Rewitched by Lucy Jane Wood
This first book is such an iconic one at the moment. Lucy Jane Wood was an influencer before she became an author, which meant she already had a good following who were primed to want to read something written by her when she launched Rewitched. If you’re not convinced to read it by its gorgeous cover alone (the colours! The falling leaves! The cat!), you will be by the blurb: Belle works in a bookshop day to day where she injects a little magic into her life. It’s only when her magical abilities are threatened that she realises she needs to fight to hold on to them through a series of magical trials with an unlikely cast of characters to help her.
Why you should read this book:
A cozy witchy read with magical trials, unlikely friendships, and cozy fall vibes that make it the perfect autumn witch book to curl up with.
Uncharmed by Lucy Jane Wood
This witchy read is by the same author as Rewitched and is set in the same world: one in which the wicche world touches on the real one. This time we follow Annie, a baker who uses her magical powers for good with a pinch of magic in everything she serves up. Life changes quite dramatically however when the Coven ask her to step up and mentor a rogue teenage witch (Sabrina vibes!) in a secluded cottage in the woods, especially when the warlock who owns the cottage turns up. I actually preferred this one to Rewitched! You can read my full Uncharmed book review here to find out more about it.
Why you should read this book:
If you love witchy rom-coms with small town charm, life changes, and just a pinch of spooky season magic, this is a good book to add to your fall reading list.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
This is apparently the ultimate cozy witch book, but I have a confession: I haven’t read it yet! It’s on my TBR, but I only just got my hands on it last week. I can’t wait to read it though!
It follows Mika Moon, a young woman with magical abilities who has spent most of her life keeping them hidden. When she gets an unexpected invitation to a mysterious house in the English countryside, she finds herself drawn into a family business of sorts – raising three young witches who need her help. With themes of everyday life, found family, and a sprinkle of true love, apparently it’s like Practical Magic meets Discovery of Witches, but with even more cozy vibes and witty banter.
Why you should read this book:
If we could only pick one witchy read for your fall season, apparently we should make it this one, it’s gentle magic, a fresh start, and cozy fall vibes all wrapped into one.
A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna
If you loved The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, then this one should absolutely be on your radar too. Sangu Mandanna is quickly becoming one of BookTok’s favourite authors for cozy witchy books. This one follows a young woman, Sera, who inherits her aunt’s magical inn where enchanted guests and magical secrets abound. She’s suddenly thrown into a whole new life of impossible tasks, gentle magic, and the everyday chaos of running a family business steeped in spells. With cozy vibes, a hint of true love, and just enough spooky season atmosphere, this is the perfect autumn witch book to add to your fall reading list.
Why you should read this book:
If you’re looking for cozy fall vibes with a cup of tea in hand, this is the perfect time to curl up with Sera’s story of magic, family, and a fresh start.
Cursed in Love by Emily Colin
This was such a lovely, charming cosy read, I picked it up on a chilly February weekend and honestly, it would be perfect for spooky season too. Set in present day in the small town of Sapphire Springs, we follow Rune, an outsider thanks to her gift of premonition that no one quite understands (or believes). She’s thrown onto a work project with Donovan Frost, aka “spreadsheet sex guy” who initially lives up to his ice-cold name, and…you can probably guess where this is heading. It has a dash of enemies-to-lovers, a sprinkle of insta-love, and paranormal elements that start quiet and then build beautifully until a big, satisfying reveal. It gave me cosy vibes throughout and sits really nicely alongside witchy novels, but it’s also more cosy fantasy/urban fantasy than overt witchy read, but absolutely one for book lovers who want gentle magic threaded through everyday life.
Why you should read this book:
The perfect palate cleanser between heavier fantasy (it was my Onyx Storm hangover read), with small-town charm, witty banter, and cosy fall vibes that make it a good book to curl up with this autumn.
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
If you’re looking for cozy witchy books with cozy fantasy vibes, this is a perfect choice. The Spellshop is about a young woman who wants nothing more than to live a quiet life surrounded by books and magic, but of course, life changes when she’s suddenly in possession of contraband spells. Forced into running a secret spellshop while hiding from the attention of witches and darker themes of magical politics, she finds herself caught between everyday life, impossible tasks, and a love life that might just turn into true love. This one really gives off cozy fall vibes while still feeling like a good book to curl up with during witching hour.
Why you should read this book:
For anyone who loves a cozy witchy read with the heart of a book lover, this is one of the best cozy witchy books to add to your fall reading list.
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
This witchy rom-com is basically a mix of Practical Magic and Gilmore Girls set in a small town full of magic and cozy vibes. Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones used dark magic in a drunken heartbroken moment to curse her ex. She didn’t think much of it at the time – until he returns to town and strange things (and mysterious deaths) start happening. Between witty banter, rekindled sparks with her high school crush, and the chaos of a revenge plot gone wrong, this one is such a fun cozy fall read for spooky season.
Why you should read this book:
If you’re craving a witchy rom-com with fall season energy, this is a good book to pick up with your next cup of tea.
Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson
This is 100% a witchy rom com, as I’m sure you can tell by the pun in the title!
This one is 100% a witchy rom-com, as you can probably tell from the pun in the title! We’re in a small town in England where Essie, a modern witch just trying to live her everyday life, runs headlong into Josh, a witch hunter who should be her enemy. Cue plenty of witty banter, strange things happening, and of course, a sprinkle of true love amid the chaos. We’ve got (you guessed it!) even more Practical Magic vibes, this time I’m going with it meeting Notting Hill, with (of course!) cozy vibes, fall season charm, and a few darker themes bubbling under the surface.
Why you should read this book: If you’re craving cozy witchy books that balance romance, supernatural threats, and laugh-out-loud moments, this is the perfect autumn witch book for your fall reading list.
Payback’s A Witch by Lana Harper
Emmy Harlow left her small town of Thistle Grove, and her magical ,family feud for a new life in Chicago, but her magical powers have been waning away from home. When she’s forced back for a spellcasting tournament, she’s reunited with old friends and faces, plus a high school crush or two. What follows is basically John Tucker Must Die crossed with the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter, but make it a witchy read with cozy fall vibes. It’s got everything: a best friend to scheme with, witty banter, a touch of dark magic, and a romantic adventure that’ll sweep you up in Thistle Grove’s gossip and drama.
Why you should read this book:
It’s a fun, witchy novel full of cozy fantasy vibes and the perfect way to kick off a new series if you’re looking for a fall season binge-read.
Witchnapped in Westerham by Dionne Lister
Lily is just your average young woman working as a photographer in Sydney, until a stranger turns up on her doorstep and announces not only that her brother has been witchnapped, but that she’s actually a witch too. Suddenly, Lily’s everyday life is flipped upside down as she travels to Westerham in England, joins forces with the Paranormal Investigation Bureau, and starts to uncover her own magical powers. With a mix of cozy vibes, supernatural threats, and lighthearted humor, this is one of those witch novels that’s super easy to fly through.
Why you should read this book: This is a fun, lightweight cozy fantasy that makes an excellent palate cleanser between darker themes or heavier witchy novels, a good book to pick up when you just want something witchy and fun, not too heavy.
